Punjab University emerge as overall champions

Moodbidri: The Punjab University of Patiala won the overall championship at the 75th All India Inter University Athletics Championship which was organized by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru in association with Government of Karnataka and Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri. The Mangalore University team won the runners up trophy.

   This 5 days national event came to an end on 20th January at Swarajya Maidan Moodbidri. This meet also created a number of records bringing fame to the sportsmen as well as to their coaches. Mr Abhaychandra Jain, Minister for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries, Govt. of Karnataka who was the President of the Valedictory ceremony congratulated all those who have put their efforts for the success of the meet. He also added that it is the biggest dream of Dr Mohan Alva to introduce the name and fane of Moodbidri in the world of sports. He also gives equal importance to sports, art and education. He said that synonym for discipline is Alva’s Education Foundation.

   Prof Rajkumar Sharma, Chief Selector of Indian Universities appreciated about the conduction of national level meet. He also assured that he would recommend Moodbidri as permanent venue to conduct the National level sports meet.

  Records:  Around 14 records were created in this meet which is the highest number of records. The record holders are Sreenith Mohan of Mangalore University for High Jump, Vijay Singh Malik of Calicut University for 400 mts Hurdles, Jadhav Sanjivini of Punjab University for 5000 mts and 10000 mts, Lalith Mathur of University of Delhi for 400 mts, Anilda Thomas of M G University for 400 mts, Navjeet Kaur of GNDU Amritsar for Shot put, Wagh Suresh of Savithribai Phule University for 1500 mts, Khushbir Kaur of Punjab University for 5000 mts walk, K M Rachana of Punjab University for Hammer throw, M Naresh of Hyderabad University for Steeple chase, M G University team for 4 X 400 mts and University of Kerala for 4 X 100 relay in the men’s section.

The record holders were felicitated with a Cash prize of Rs 25,000 each.
