Lingaa distributors get Rs. 10 cr.

Actor Rajinikanth has refunded one-third of the Rs. 33-crore loss reportedly incurred by distributors and exhibitors of his recent release, Lingaa. Sources close to the actor said that Rajinikanth decided to pay Rs. 10 crores ‘on a humanitarian basis’ to the distributors and exhibitors, who have been demanding a full refund and had threatened a ‘begging protest’ in front of his residence in Poes Garden.

After the announcement, it is learnt that the distributors have dropped the idea. While the original demand was Rs. 33 crore, sources close to the actor say he felt Rs. 10 crore was a fair amount. A distributor admitted that they are ‘unhappy’ with the actor’s decision to repay only one-third of the money, but said that they have no other go. “A businessman can plan and factor in a loss of 20-30%, but in this case, we have lost our entire investment. We expected Rajinikanth to refund a substantial amount, but it has not happened,” he said.

Actor Sarath Kumar, who has been involved in the negotiations between Rajinikanth, the film’s producer Rockline Venkatesh and distributors, made it clear that Rajinikanth had paid back a part of the losses purely on compassionate grounds. “It has been made very clear that he (Rajinikanth) has no obligation to repay the money. After all, distributors don’t pay back when they make profits,” he said. One of the distributors said that a deal amongst themselves is yet to be reached. “We are yet to arrive at a consensus on who would get how much,” he said.

Holi, a special day for Rajnikanth

While celebrating the auspicious festival called Holi, let us also roll a few years back to 1975. So what happened on this festival day back in 1975? Well, it was the beginning of something substantial. This day announced the arrival of 'Rajinikanth'.

Superstar Rajinikanth Gets The Biggest Gift Of His Life On This Auspicious Festival Day! Rajinikanth had mentioned in an interview that it was on the festival day of Holi, he was given three options by the legendary director K Balachander. Srikkanth, Rajinikanth and Chandrakanth were the names offered by the Apoorva Raagangal director to then Shivaji Rao Gaekwad. Shivaji Rao chose Rajinikanth and then Rajinikanth was chosen by destiny.

From that day onwards, it is said that Rajinikanth made it a point to make a phone call to K Balachander as a mark of gratitude on the propitious day of Holi each and every year. However, at a recent function, Balachander reminded Rajinikanth that he had not been getting his routine phone calls of late.

Rajinikanth then promised him that he would start making calls from the following year and excused himself for not making those calls due to his busy schedule and commitments. As we all know that the maverick director passed away recently, this Holi might not be as auspicious as it was for Rajinikanth all these years. Also, going forward the star actor will not be able to make those routine calls to his mentor on the festival day of Holi.

National Cinema Was Born In Chennai, Not In Mumbai Nor Kolkata: Kamal Haasan

Expressing his condolence to fans and family of legendary producer Daggubati Ramanaidu, Kamal Haasan spoke about the legacy the famed producer has left behind and his contribution to Indian cinema as a national producer.

Interestingly Kamal also revealed that national cinema was born in South India especially in Chennai and not in Bollywood. He said, "the strongest point about South India, especially Chennai is that the national cinema sprang from here. It is not in the north that you found national cinema, not in Kolkata nor in Mumbai, but it is here." Kamal Haasan in the past, has always spoken about the quality of films made in South India and how it often goes unnoticed at a global stage. He has also mentioned that people should stop addressing Tamil films as Kollywood as movie buffs in the foreign countries might not recognize it.

It is to be noted that regional films made in India often gets recognized overseas only because of the star value if and when the movie has a big star associated to it. It is high time that quality movies made in regional language reaches wide range of audiences and considering all these films as Indian movies is the first step forward, according to the Ulaganayagan.

Meanwhile, Uttama Villain is expected to swoop into the big screens on April 2nd. Directed by Ramesh Aravind, the movie has legendary filmmakers K Viswanath and late K Balachander among others. The film's music will be taken care by Ghibran of Vaagai Sooda Vaa fame who will be seen working with Kamal Haasan for the first time.

Mass begging protest outside Rajnikanth's house

Mass begging protest outside Rajnikanth's house

Distributors of Rajinikanth starrer film Lingaa faced massive losses due to the film’s unsuccessful earnings. For which they had submitted a plea asking refund of Rs 35 crores. Due to the rejection of the plea the distributors have now decided to go on a mass begging protest.

According to the distributors the film has earned more than 100 crores from Eros International. “Last month it was decided we would be compensated after extensive accounting of the losses. And for this, Rajini sir had appointed his friend and distributor Tirupur Subramaniam, who ascertained the quantum loss suffered by us. However, the producer is unwilling to pay Rs.35 crore,” distributor Singaravadivelan stated.

He further added, “The amount we claim as refund is far less than the salary paid to Rajinikanth. If Eros had paid so much to buy the film, we don’t understand why it is difficult for producer Venkatesh to refund us when he had promised us that the film will do better business than ‘Enthiran’.”

After the hunger strike done by the distributors, producer Venkatesh had offered a 10 percent reimbursement. The distributors turned down the offer and are now prepping to go on a mass begging protest right outside superstar Rajinikanth’s house.

“They’ve made us beg for the refund. And we will do it as we’ve run out of options. We will beg right outside Rajinikanth’s house,” the distributor Singaravadivelan stated.

Eros International’s Lingaa is touted to be one of the biggest films of Rajinikanth as his fans get to see him in live action after a gap of more than 4 years after Robot, starring Superstar Rajinikanth, Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty.

“Lingaa” is Directed by KS Ravikumar and Produced by Rockline Venkatesh.
