Yoga Day and the controversies

Many debates, arguments, controversies are surrounding the upcoming International day of Yoga.

Prime minister Narendra Modi while addressing UN general assembly floated the idea of International day of yoga. To which 177 countries nodded their heads in the positive.  Within few days United nations general assembly declared June 21 as International day of Yoga.

Many think Yoga is a physical exercise where people twist, turn, stretch, and breathe in the most complex ways. But these are actually only the most superficial aspect of this profound science of unfolding the infinite potentials of the human mind and soul. As saints discovered the immense effect of yoga on human body and mind six thousand years ago it was indentified with the Hindu religion.

But yoga has been adopted by many countries as part of the exercise. Yoga has the healing power and it rejuvenates our body and soul. It is not about worshipping God, it is about worshipping our body and soul.

As the event is nearing, Muslim organizations and clerics in India are strongly opposing the idea of performing yoga in educational institutions on the day saying it is against their religion.

Everybody in this country have their right to choose their do’s and don’ts. So it is quite clear that nobody can dictate anybody to act on his order.

The Union government decided to drop ‘Surya Namaskar’ from Yoga day after Muslims protested against it. But the debates are still on.

The programme, which will be conducted between 7 am and 7:35 am in the entire country simultaneously on June 21, is likely to be attended by celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty and Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli.

It is upto every individual that whether he want to join the celebration or not. There is no compulsion.
