JEDDAH — Deputy Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, second deputy premier and minister of defense, will leave for an official visit to Russia on Wednesday.

The visit is in response to an invitation from the Russian government and based on the directive of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, according to a Royal Court statement.

Prince Muhammad will hold talks with President Vladimir Putin and top Russian officials.

The visit is expected to further bolster bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation in various fields.

The historic relations between the two countries go back to 1926 when the then Soviet Union became the first nation to recognize the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and henceforth the relations witnessed remarkable growth.

In 1930 the Soviet consulate in Jeddah transformed into an embassy, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
