The soldiers belonged to the 6 Dogra infantry regiment, which is de-inducting from the Moltuk valley. The convoy was ambushed between Paralong and Charong villages, about 30 km from state capital Imphal, where the soldiers were headed, at around 8.30 am, the police said.
The attackers reportedly used Rocket Propelled Grenade or RPG launchers and other arms.
Central security agencies have said they suspect a mixed group of militants from the Naga group NSCN(K) and the United National Liberation Front of Manipur, or UNLF, is behind the attack.
The jawans injured were airlifted by the Army for treatment, the police said. A reinforcement party of security forces is combing the area for the militants, they said.
Chandel saw a shutdown yesterday over the killing of a woman, allegedly by soldiers.
