Bengaluru: In a freak accident, a family of four, including two children, were killed on-the-spot while the driver sustained injuries after the Tata Sumo, in which they were travelling, collided with a truck on Thursday morning.

The accident was reported on National Highway near Volvo Factory in Nandagudi traffic police station limits.

Police have identified the deceased family members as Saraswati (60) Praveen Kumar (31) a software engineer by profession, Mohit (12) and Dikshita (5). The family members were said to be residents of Avlahalli.

According to the traffic police, the family was coming from Chittoor and was heading to Avlahalli when the freak accident occurred. The driver of the Tata Sumo was said to be over-speeding and was driving negligently. When the car reached Volvo Factory, the driver supposedly failed to judge a parked truck on the road and in a bid to over-take it, rammed the car the rear-side of the truck.

The impact of the collision was so much that the front portion of the Tata Sumo was dismantled, crushing Praveen who was sitting in the front seat. Saraswati, who was sitting in the back-seat with Mohit and Dikshita, sustained severe head injuries and died on the way to the hospital. Few passers-by immediately stopped their vehicles and rushed to rescue the family. Meanwhile, one of the passers-by alerted the police officials who rushed to the spot.

“The driver of the car escaped with injuries while the family died on-the-spot due to excessive bleeding. Praveen, who was sitting on the front seat was crushed to death as the rear-end of the truck pierced through the left side of the car’s windshield killing him. We have sent the bodies for post-mortem and have also informed the family members,” said an investigating officer.

A case has been registered in Nandagudi traffic police station.
