Belgavi: 995 snakebite cases reported in past 2 years

Belgavi: The district has witnessed 995 snakebite cases in the past 28 months, as per the records of health department recent updates, most of which are reported during the rainy season. 

As many as 15 people got snakebite treatment in the government district hospital in city in the past one week itself, after unseasonal rainfall. Most of the cases reported from Khanapur, Belagavi and Hukkeri taluks. According to health department sources, six people died due to snakebite in 2013.

Around 125 snakebite cases have been reported in the district in last four months. As per the statistics available, average one or two people are suffered by snakebite in the district. As many as 478 snakebite cases took place in 2013 and 392 in 2014. An average 2-3 people suffered by snakebite in Khanapur and Belagavi taluks, which comprises more forest villages.

Generally, snakebite cases are reported more in rural areas and farmers who work in farms day and night are more vulnerable for such incidents. However, since the 108 ambulance service is introduced by the government, it has been turned boon for the sufferers of snakebite.
