Bengaluru: A 10-year-old boy drowned in a storm-water drain in Yamalur near Bellandur lake on Saturday.

After an intense search for over ten hours, Government officials including, Fire Department, National Disaster Response Force and HAL Police fished out the body on Sunday.

The victim, Junaid, was the third son of Manuvan and Shabana, who are contract labourers and resident of Yamalur. Junaid had ventured out of the house to play on Saturday afternoon but did not return.

The incident came to light around 9 p.m. on Saturday night after the harried parents, who frantically searched for their son, approached the HAL Police Station and informed the Police. Swinging into action, a team of over 25 officials with 15 Fire personnel and 10 rescue officials from National Disaster Response Force along with the HAL Police began the search on Saturday night.

After an intense search for over four hours, the officials had to suspend the rescue operation around 2.30 a.m. which continued on Sunday morning at around 6 a.m. It was only after 9 a.m. that the body trapped in water hyacinths was found afloat in the drain located behind Mantri Apartments situated in Devarabisanahalli on Sunday morning.

Junaid fell into the drain on Saturday noon at around 3.30 p.m. when trying to cross the 20-feet deep drain, which was covered with wooden plank, and go to the other side to get his ball. As he was walking over the wooden plank to cross the drain, a plank broke from the middle and Junaid lost his balance and fell into the drain. His friends, who rushed for his help, immediately informed his parents after they failed to locate him.

A case has been registered in HAL Police Station limits.
