Bengaluru: An established teacher working with a reputed international school in East Bengaluru and his wife have been accused of criminal breach of trust and cheating their domestic help who worked at the couple’s home over the last six years.

The couple has been accused of taking 20 sovereigns of gold and Rs 40,000 in cash from the victim. They did not pay her a penny as salary over the last six years and a case has been registered at the Ramamurthy Nagar police station, which the cops are investigating.

The accused couple has been identified as Vijay D’Souza, a coordinator and head of the department in ‘Humanities’ at a reputed international school in Kothanur, and his wife Sheena D’Souza, a homemaker. The couple along with their differently-abled daughter has been residing at their plush apartment in Oakwood Residency in Horamavu for many years. The couple employed Victoria since 2009, for cooking, household chores and most importantly for taking care of their differently-abled teenage daughter.

The couple approached a charitable Christian missionary trust in Chennai in 2009, and convinced the nuns about the employment and well-being of Victoria in Bengaluru, who was an orphan, under the care of the nuns. Everything went well until Victoria, turned 32 this year and looked forward to getting married and settling down as recommended by the nuns in Chennai.

When she informed her employers about her plans, she realized that there was no monthly salary deposited to her bank account over the last six years. The twenty sovereigns of gold and a fixed deposit of Rs 40,000 in her name, which was in the custody of her employer, have vanished. The couple has claimed that they have no idea about it. Victoria then approached an NGO, Domestic Workers’ Rights’ Union and narrated her plight to them. It was with the NGO’s intervention that an FIR was lodged at the Ramamurthy Nagar police station.

“The victim said she was employed for a salary of Rs 2,500 per month since 2009, and that her salary was to be deposited in a bank, which we don’t think happened. A 12-hour live-in worker should be paid at least Rs 9,000 per month, according to the rate prescribed by the government,” said, Geeta Menon, a renowned social activist. “The police should investigate and find the victim’s gold and money,” she added.

“Being a teacher and a head of the department of Humanities at a reputed international school, the accused proved to be a heartless human himself,” said another activist.
