Theatre fete begins with 'The Long March'
Kozhikode: Minister for Cultural Affairs K.C. Joseph inaugurated the 14th National Theatre Festival at Tagore Centenary Hall here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Joseph said that the proposed cultural complex for the Malabar region would be set up in the district if the district administration could identify the required land for the project.

“The District Collector is learnt to have started looking for the land already,” he said. The Minister said that the Cultural Affairs Department would give all support for the construction of the multi-storeyed theatre complex as part of the proposed Gender Park here.

Delivering the keynote address, playwright and theatre personality Kavalam Narayana Panikkar urged theatre artistes and playwrights to keep away from ‘gadgets and gimmicks’ that would take the attention away from the actor, who was the ‘king’ on the stage. “We are dealing with a live medium, which is completely new and pertinent at each staging even if the text on which it is based might be centuries old,” he said.

Direct communication

Criticising the moves to take the medium of theatre closer to cinema, Mr. Panikkar said such efforts would only destroy the unique character and identity of the medium.

“Direct and live communication between the actor and audience is the soul of theatre,” he said, urging theatre workers to stop taking the medium lightly.
