Mumbai: A ward boy of a south Mumbai hospital was arrested on Saturday for allegedly masturbating outside the ICU waiting room, while a patient’s kin was inside the waiting room. The woman had been talking on the phone inside the room when she noticed the ward boy in the act and complained to her husband on the phone. The husband rushed to the hospital and, subsequently, lodged a complaint with the Azad Maidan police. The accused has been identified as Vivek Jadhav, a 30-year-old ward boy at Bombay Hospital.

The incident occurred in the wee hours of Saturday; the complainant, a 28-year-old woman, had come to visit her grandmother on Friday night as the latter had been admitted to the ICU of the hospital after suffering a heart attack. The woman had come to the hospital and planned to stay overnight with her grandmother.

At around 1 am on Saturday, Jadhav saw the woman talking on her phone outside the ICU waiting room and told her to go back inside the room. Jadhav then sat outside the waiting room and allegedly unzipped his trousers. The woman inside the room saw this, but ignored it.

She then went away to drink water and, when she returned to the waiting room, saw the ward boy masturbating. The woman had been on the phone with her husband all this while and told him about the ward boy’s behaviour, scared that something untoward might happen. According to the police, “The woman’s husband came to the hospital from Malad at 2.24 am, after hearing about the incident.

He then informed the security and the police. There was a door between the spots where the accused and the complainant were sitting and this door was open. We are yet to take the statement of the accused.” Police then reached the spot and arrested the ward boy. They said Jadhav stays near the hospital and that investigations are underway.

Jadhav was booked under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and was presented at Esplanade Magistrate Court, where he was remanded to judicial custody. Dr Sagar Sakle, spokesperson of Bombay Hospital, neither picked up mid-day’s phone calls, nor replied to text messages.
