New Delhi: In a first ever operation, the Indian Army crossed Myanmar borders to strike against militants  hideouts, inflicting major casualties on the outlaws.

According to media reports, army paratroopers ambushed the rebels and killed at least 12 militants.

"Early this morning the Indian Army engaged two separate groups of militants along the Indo-Myanmar border,"  Major Gen Randhir Singh said.

"This was done at 2 different locations, along the Nagaland and Manipur border," he added.

"Significant casualties have been inflicted on the militants," Major Gen Randheer Singh said.

Militants firing rocket-propelled grenades ambushed an army convoy in Manipur on Thursday morning, killing at least 18 soldiers in what sources said was the deadliest single strike on the military wing anywhere in the country in nearly two decades.

The Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) and the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) claimed responsibility for the attack, some 30km from the Myanmar border in Chandel district.
