NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old youth was mowed down by a car at Kasturba Nagar crossing near Vivek Vihar in east Delhi on Monday night. CCTV footage showed the youth getting knocked down from his scooter by a Maruti Ritz which dragged him for 50 metres.

The impact of the collision was such that the scooter skidded on the road and then bounced off the traffic signal. The victim, Vinay Jindal, was a BBA student of Indraprastha University and was returning home on his cousin's scooter. The incident took place at 11.30pm, on the eve of his sister's wedding. His father is a businessman and stays in A-Block of Vivek Vihar. The wedding was finally called off.

The CCTV footage showed Jindal taking a right turn on a black scooter when the Ritz hit it. The impact threw him on the road after which he was dragged along with the car for 50 metres.

The car driver stopped for a brief moment to look at the lifeless youth before speeding away. People then gathered around but nobody touched him for over eight minutes till a PCR van arrived.

Family members said that the youth was taken to a private hospital 100 metres away where he was declared very critical. Cops recovered an identity card from his pocket and informed his cousin, Mohit Gupta. By the time the family reached the hospital, Jindal was declared dead.

"An FIR under IPC sections of rash driving (279) and causing death due to negligence (304A IPC) has been lodged," said a police officer.

The car, with a UP registration number, also hit another scooter a little ahead in which a couple and their children were injured. Police are trying to track the driver and the case has been transferred to the motor accidents claims tribunal.
