Baripada: Five persons have been sentenced to ten years rigorous imprisonment by a local court after being convicted in a gang rape case involving a tribal woman in Mayurbhanj district last year. Additional District Judge, Baripada, Sudipta Kumar Acharya on Tuesday held the five persons guilty under section 376 of IPC (punishment for rape) and sentenced them to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on each of them.

In default of the penalty payment, the guilty persons would have to undergo an additional three months imprisonment, the court order said. A tribal woman, who was attending to her sick husband at the district headquarters hospital here on January 19, 2013, was raped by six persons while she had gone to attend nature’s call to a nearby stream. The police had arrested all the six persons. However, one of the six accused died in the prison.
