Mumbai:A couple who eloped from Uttar Pradesh, allegedly committed suicide at Vikhroli here on Wednesday. Habib Hajara Khan and his wife Faima were found hanging at some distance from each other.

Neither left a suicide note but preliminary investigation suggests that Habib and Faima — both of whom were previously married and had left their spouses — ended their lives for different reasons, police said. It was only five days ago that the two fled U.P. and started living in a slum near Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli west.

While Habib’s body was found hanging in a toilet behind a cement shop where he worked as a driver, Faima’s was found at their home which is a few metres away.

Police said the incident came to light when Habib’s employer didn’t get any response on his phone despite calling him several times. As he was shutting his shop and packing up to leave for home, some of the workers told him about the bathroom that had been found locked for a long time.

A police team broke the door to find Habib’s body and Faima’s thereafter.

A Vikhroli police station officer said Faima had told her neighbours that Habib lied to her about his financial status and she found out the truth only after moving to Mumbai.

“We suspect Habib must have either lied or exaggerated his financial status to convince her to abandon her husband and child and run away with him,” the officer added.
