A quiet affair of 'I' audio launch in Telugu
The audio launch of director Shankar’s magnum opus, I, was a gala affair in Chennai. In contrast, the audio launch function of the Telugu version, in Hyderabad was a small event for a focussed group — the media and a few dignitaries from the Telugu film industry.

The Tamil version was launched in Chennai with a musical evening by A.R. Rahman and team, compered by singer Chinmayi and saw the who’s who of Chennai in attendance, including Rajinikanth. The crowd cheered on as Vikram and Amy Jackson performed for the song ‘Ennodu Nee Irundhal’ with the beauty and the beast theme.

On Tuesday evening, director Shankar, actor Vikram, cinematographer P.C. Sreeram and art director Muthuraj arrived in Hyderabad after the audio launch of the Hindi version in Mumbai the previous day. The Telugu album has songs penned by lyricists Ananta Sriram, Suddala Ashok Teja, Ramajogayya Sastri and Chandrabose. The lyricists’ awe of Shankar’s repertoire was evident when they spoke on stage.

Producer NV Prasad shared anecdotes on his working experience with Shankar and his professionalism. Art director Muthuraj revealed that it took him three months to sketch the set for the beauty and the beast song and another three months to execute it. P.C. Sreeram remained a man of few words and in a reply to compere Suma, said he had his task cut out — to make the ugly  also appear beautiful.

Directors Rajamouli, Trivikram Srinivas and Boyapati Srinu seemed to share a mutual admiration club with director Shankar, praising his oeuvre.

Shankar apart, the one who had lavish praises showered on him was actor Vikram, with the team sharing insights into how he prepared for the role, which required him to beef up at one point and shed almost 25 kilos for the ‘deformed’ look. There were days the actor had the prosthetic make-up on for more than 14 hours.

I’s leading lady Amy Jackson and music director A.R. Rahman were missed at the event. The icing on the cake was when Shankar stated that he is open to directing a straight Telugu film in the near future.

I is scheduled to release during Sankranti.
