Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday appealed to women to stop the practice of “purdah”, saying it is a “kupratha” (evil tradition). Addressing the national convention of the SP women’s wing here, he said, “Purdah system is a kupratha, we oppose it and never encourage it. When I went to a village for dinner, I requested the women to shun purdah. I only ate after that. The practice was later abolished there.”

Stating that women like Sita, Draupadi and Savitri had not adopted purdah, he said, “I ask men not to encourage purdah… Jo badhawa dey, pakad kar jail bhej do (Those who encourage it should be sent to jail),” he said.

“Now women are active in various fields, they wear uniforms. It is up to you to decide to end this kupratha,” he said. “It is an era of equality and we should give equal status to women,” he added. Mulayam also criticised his son and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s free laptop scheme. “I was not in favour of the scheme. What happened after distributing the free laptops? Narendra Modi’s speeches reached every house. It was done cleverly and we lost the polls,” he said.
