Organisers offer to modify Kambalabut activists want total ban

Mangaluru: With Kambala — the slush race of buffaloes — having been banned in Udupi and similar action expected in Dakshina Kannada, the association of those who organise these events have offered to modify it. But activists have sought a total ban.

The organisers of Kambala, however, say they have taken steps to modify and prevent any violence against the animals. The riders have been sensitised against the use of baton, according to Suresh K. Poojary, general secretary of the District Kambala Committee. He said that Kambalas were part of socio-religious practices. He added that the committee would convince Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra that the sport must continue. Suma R. Nayak, trustee of the city-based Animal Care Trust, said unlike horses, buffaloes would not run unless beaten by the rider. “It is unnatural for them to run,” she said, pointing out that riders were known to rub chilli powder and lemon on the buffalo’s back just before the race as part of the preparation for the race. However, the chilli powder and lemon cause burning sensation in the animal.

Khader against move

Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader said that the government would take steps to continue the sport. Mr. Khader said that he had discussed the issue with local MLAs and they would speak to Chief Minister Siddaramiah about the importance of the rural sport.
