Mangaluru: Vented dam's in Mangalore division (DK, Udupi and UK) of small scale irrigation department will have new technology installed in place instead of the trivial wooden planks currently used, that had to be replaced every two years.
The small irrigation department minster Shivaraj Thangadagi briefed about the new technique to the media persons in the city on December 3, Wednesday.
"These planks or the gates will be automated and long lasting as they are made from a special material called Fibre Re-enforced Plastic. Like now, they do not need a person to operate but will operate as per the water level. This technology has been provided by a company called Godbole corporation and mainly installed in the vented dams constructed to prevent the flow of salt water into the sweet water and hence preventing the damage on crops in the basin as well."
"On pilot basis this will be implemented in Senapura in Udupi in an expense of 12 crores and after analysing the efficiency it will be implemented in all vented dams of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada", said the minister.
Yettinahole to be implemented
The minister said that even though the proposed Yettinahole project as a whole does not come come under his department, the 528 ponds will be constructed in the other side of Western ghats under his department and tender has been called for the first stage of the project already.
Mangaluru South MLA JR Lobo was present at the occasion.
