Mumbai: Woman hangs herself after husband thrashes her

Mumbai: A young woman in Dahisar committed suicide after her husband allegedly thrashed her during a fight. The MHB police station, where the case has been registered, has arrested the deceased’s husband and father-in-law for abetting her suicide and harassing her. The victim was identified as Aretta Mahir Khan (23), who used to stay with her husband, Mahir Khan (23), and father-in-law, Ayub Khan (52) in Dahisar (East). Aretta had come to Mumbai five years ago from her hometown of Silvassa for higher studies and had fallen in love with Mahir.

A year ago, the couple decided to tie the knot. According to the police, “Around 8.30 pm on November 11, Mahir had a fight with his wife, Aretta, and beat her up badly. She then called up her mother in Silvassa and told her of the incident, and also complained of the the daily harassment she had to face at the hands of her husband and father-in-law.

She then locked Mahir outside the house, locked herself in her room and hanged herself from the ceiling fan.” Mahir asked his neighbours to help him open the door, but they couldn’t. The police were called immediately, and when they broke open the door they found Aretta’s body hanging from the fan. After registering an accidental death report (ADR), the cops sent her body to her parents in Silvassa for the funeral.

Parents allege murder
Aretta’s father Adomario Nunas (54) alleged to the police that his daughter had called them before her death. “Her husband beat her up that day, and then he killed her,” Nunas told the police. He added that the Mahir and Ayub tortured Aretta for money, since she came from a wealthy family and was the only earning member in her in-laws’ house.

But the police then gave him a demo of how the events unfolded to make it clear that it couldn’t have been a murder. They said the woman had locked herself in her room and hanged herself, and showed Nunas the broken door to her room, explaining to him that had it been a murder, the door couldn’t have been locked from the inside.

In any case, the police have registered a case under sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (common intent), and arrested Mahir and Ayub Khan. Anil Awhad, inspector at MHB police station, said, “We arrested both the accused for harassment. We are waiting for the post-mortem report to take further action.”
