Gold worth Rs.52 lakhs seized in Mangaluru air port: Three including two air port workers arrested
Mangaluru: The innovative ideas of smugglers to smuggle gold into the country continues as in a latest attempt a mobile phone pouch was used to carry the illegal gold.

Officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport on Saturday November 29 arrested three persons for smuggling 2 kg of gold, valued at Rs 52.9 lakhs.

The seized gold was found in the form of two gold bars each weighing one kg, concealed separately in two mobile phone pouches and kept together in a polythene Dubai Duty Free carry bag, placed on the floor beneath a row of chairs placed adjacent to M/s Flemingo Duty Free Shop situated in the arrival hall of Mangalore International Airport.

The accused passenger has been identified as Abdul Manaf Akkoth (26), resident of Kozhikode in Kerala. He arrived at Mangalore International Airport on November 29 at about 8.40 hours by Jet Airways Flight No 9W531 from Dubai.

Two persons who work at the Airport named Ratheesh of M/s Flemingo Duty Free Shop, and B S Nijeesh Raj, working as a salesman in two firms - Words & Worth Book Shop as well as Teaicoff Snack Bar, have also helped him in this smuggling activity. Ratheesh and Nijeesh Raj are from South Kerala.

All the three accused were arrested and produced before the court on Sunday November 30. They were remanded to judicial custody.
