BENGALURU: The state government has decided to rope in private players to develop six of the 12 seasonal ports, including the Belekeri port, that come under its purview.
Textiles and Ports Minister Baburao Chinchansur told reporters on Monday that of the six ports, five — Belekeri, Pavinakurve, Tadadi, Honnavar and Manki — are in Uttara Kannada. The sixth port is in Malpe in Dakshina Kannada district.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the minister said.
Delhi-based Ashraya Ports will take up development works at Belekeri port by investing Rs 3,000 crore. The development works include providing a connecting road and jetty among others.
In return, the company will collect revenue from the port for 30 years, Chinchansur said.
But he added that the government was yet to finalise the revenue-sharing model with all the private firms.
Belekeri aside, the ports require an investment of Rs 500 crore to Rs 800 crore. Shree Renuka Sugars has come forward to take up the development of Manki port, located between Honnavar and Bhatkal.
