Broom protest held against SEZ by DYFI and Nagarika Horata Samiti

Mangaluru: Porake pradarshana "Broom Protest", was organized by Nagarika Horata Samiti in association with DYFI from Kottara Chowki to the SEZ office here, on December 22 against coke and sulphur divisions of MRPL. Prior to the protest, a rally was held from Kottara Chowki culminating in front of the MUDA office with brooms held in the hands of the protesters

Addressing the protesters, Muneer Katipalla said, "When the MRPL and SEZ industries came to Mangalore, people of the district were very happy thinking that their children will get jobs in these companies and their living standard will improve. But now Jokatte villagers are facing severe health problems due to noise, dust and water pollution. Many of the villagers are also suffering from skin diseases. The main reason for this is the Coke and Sulphur plant which should be shut down immediately."

He further said that even after knowing the health problems of the people, MRPL has not taken any action to stop the pollution. "The residents of Jokatte area have protested against the company but all those who have protested, have been booked by the police and cases have been filed against them. The district administration should intervene and shut down the Coke and Sulphur plant immediately," he urged. Zakaria Jokatte, Bava Jokatte, Sheriff Jokatte, Abu Baker, J Hussain, Imtiyaz and others were also present.
