Mangalore: We should support the development of agricultural, environmental and social policies conducive to sustainable family farming said Dr. S.M. Shivapraash, Director, Karnataka Veterinary and fisheries college, Bidar. He was inaugurating one day seminar on World food day 2014-Scientist and farmers interaction conducted by All India Radio, Mangalore, in association with Doordarshan Kendra, Extension Directorate, Karnataka Veterinary and fisheries college, Bidar, College of Fisheries, Mangalore and Professional fisheries Graduates forum, Mumbai. The programme was conducted at Prof. H.P.C Shetty Hall, College of fisheries, Mangalore.
The 2014 world food day theme-'Family farming -feeding the world, caring for the earth' has been chosen to raise the profile of family farming and smallholder farmers said Dr. K.M. Shankar, Dean, College of fisheries. He said this is a strong signal that the international community recognizes the important contributions of family farmers to world food security.
There are various types of fishes. Ornament fishes are giving pleasure to all. Fishes having its own history said B.V. Padma, Station Director of AIR, Mangalore. She explained family farming is inextricably linked to national and global food security. Both in developing and developed countries, family farming is the predominant form of agriculture n the food production sector.
Another Chief Guest Manohar Prasad said fish is the main sea food in Coastal belt of Karnataka. Fish can be the one the solutions for eradicating hunger and malnutrition. It is the cheapest source of protein. Its food conversion ratio is the lowest among animals. Dr. Vasanthkumar Perla, Asstt. Station Director of AIR, Mangalore gave key note address. He said Akashvani is broadcasting fish culture and its improvement with new technology for the benefit of farmers.
Dr. Shivkumar M welcomed the gathering. Dr. H. Hanumathappa gave vote of thanks, while Shyam prasad compered the programme. After inaugural function two session on 'Responsible fisheries and sustainable fishing. More than 50 farmers were actively participated to this seminar. Various relevant questions raised by farmers and got the answer from specialist.
