Changing the tradition: Two thousand widows perform Chandika Homa in Kudroli

Mangalore: Around two thousand widows performed Chandika Homa (religious ritual) at Kudroli temple on the eve of Diwali. Widows from and around Mangalore took part in the Homa. Former union minister Janardhan Poojary who took the brave step of appointing scheduled caste widow women as priests in the temple has now taken one step forward by allowing widow women perform Chandika Homa, one of the sacred rituals of Hindus. Thousands of people witnessed the historical moment.

Speaking to the presspersons Poojary said that eradicating the differences of upper and lower caste, widow systems is the main goal behind the decision. God finds no difference in his devotees hence widows have the equal right to take part in every religious rite, he said.
