Mobile tower near the school: Children’s lives in danger

Karkala: Even after many protests by locals to remove the mobile tower installed near government educational institution in Hosmaru in Eedu village the district administration has not shown any interest in fixing the problem.

In one side of the Bajagoli-Belthangady road there is a government primary and higher schools and in the other side is a mobile tower. Hundreds of children come to this school to study after crossing the hills and the woods. They remain in the school for six hours every day. The mobile tower located nearby the school is posing threat to the health of these children. Locals have many times appealed the district administration and submitted memorandums to shift this tower from the site. The memorandums were handed over to then district Dpty Commissioner Reju. But as he got transferred the problem remained unattended.

It took many years to learn about the ill effects of endosulphan pesticide which was used in areca plantations. This has lead to the birth of mentally and physically under developed children. Many people in Eedu village have become victims of endosulphan.  The movile tower installed near the school is just another sign of future destruction. The only way to avoid this is to shift this tower from its present location to somewhere else.
